Daily Sketch
Colorado Academic Standard:
High School, Standard 3. Invent and Discover to Create
GLE 1. Establish a practice of planning and experimentation to advance concepts and technical skills.
Each day, the students completed the “Daily Sketch” assignment. This was a 30 minute sketching exercise based on a written prompt. After work time, the students would show each other their sketches and we would have a discussion about their process and ideas.
Each day’s prompt was something different. In the slideshow below, there is the assignment page with rubric that students would view, as well as examples of student work.
The intention behind this assignment was for students to practice their comic drawings skills and to develop their characters and their settings further. It also served as a space for brainstorming ideas for their plot of their stories.
Comic Analysis:
Colorado Academic Standard:
High School, Standard 4. Relate and Connect to Transfer.
GLE 1. Research and analyze the ways visual artists, designers and scholars express personal views and beliefs and how these perspectives have a social context that enlarges the meaning of an artwork beyond the individual maker.
In this daily assignment, we would investigate, research and analyze a different comic book/ graphic novel or learn about comic book history. The students would then answer questions during individual work time, and then we would have a share-out and discussion. This assignment gave students a space to develop and discuss opinions through the use of literacy.
Here are some examples of student answers to the questions:
a) When assuming something is facts based off of a small sample and saying it is exactly how everything is for that group of people.
b) I seen and heard of violence, oppression and even death from stereotypes.
c) I have been stereotyped before and it feels cruel because people already have negative stigmas about you and define you as a completely different person than you really are.
d) I think it shows the negative effects because it’ll hold more weight since it’s actually a person that has been stereotyped, to me it provides well needed insight.
e) I think I have changed, especially from middle school to high school, in order to fit more in my community.
