Sketchbooks & Lattes:
Colorado Academic Standard:
High School, Standard 3. Invent and Discover to Create
GLE 1. Establish a practice of planning and experimentation to advance concepts and technical skills.
Each day of the 4 week project started with the “Sketchbooks & Lattes” assignment. This was a 30 minute sketching exercise based on a written prompt. After work time, the students would show each other their sketches and we would have a discussion about their process.
Each day’s prompt was something different. Below is the assignment page that students would view as well as the rubric for this assignment.
The intention behind this assignment was for students to practice their technical drawing and observation skills to develop their own personal art style. This assignment also served as a soft start to the day as we began our 3 hour long morning session.

Aesthetic Scan:
Colorado Academic Standard:
High School, Standard 4. Relate and Connect to Transfer.
GLE 1. Research and analyze the ways visual artists, designers and scholars express personal views and beliefs and how these perspectives have a social context that enlarges the meaning of an artwork beyond the individual maker.
The Aesthetic Scan assignment followed the sketching prompt each day. In this assignment, we would investigate, research and analyze a different artist each day, using videos, images and written pieces. The students would then answer questions during individual work time, and then we would have a share-out and discussion. This assignment gave students a space to develop and discuss opinions through the use of literacy.
This day shown below, we looked images and watched a video about The Heidelberg Project, which is a neighborhood art installation in Detroit. The students then answered questions on a Jamboard.
Below is a slideshow of the Jamboard with student answers. The questions are in green.
